ABOUT TSURUOKA

Living

      Assets

Tsuruoka was the only city in Japan to be recognized as a UNESCO City of Food Culture in 2014.

Tsuruoka is one of the most agriculturally active areas in Japan. Among agricultural products, native crops have long supported our lives and played a role in passing on the unique culture of the region.

Native crops are valuable "living cultural assets" that are responsible for passing on cultivation techniques and food culture, and various projects are underway to pass them on to the next generation.

※Native crops are vegetables, fruit trees, grains, and other crops that have been cultivated and enjoyed by people for many years.

Section Title

There are many sightseeing spots in Tsuruoka. One of them is the Kamo Aquarium.

There are more than 60 species of jellyfish at any given time, and the aquarium is known as the place where you can see the largest number of jellyfish in the world. In 2012, the aquarium was recognized by Guinness World Records as having the world's largest number of jellyfish exhibits.

One of the most popular exhibits at the Kamo Aquarium is the Jellyfish Dream Theater. It is a huge circular tank with a diameter of 5 meters, in which as many as 10,000 jellyfish drift about. The circular tank is illuminated by deep blue lights, giving you the feeling of being in the ocean.
